The UW Language & Rhetoric Colloquium invites Dr. Abeer Almaimouni, a recent graduate from the University of Washington Electrical Engineering Department and Assistant Professor at Kuwait University, to share writings from her recent blog series including "The Correction Pen," "The Eavesdropper," and "Children of War" about her memories of childhood in wartime Kuwait. These writings enact practices of moving beyond a single story, which novelist Chimamanda Adichie has advocated, and readers of Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis books will recognize the power of a narrative from a child's perspective enhanced by adult reflection that recounts not just war, but resilience as well, and the importance of recognizing pain in the Other. This is an invitational event to practice rhetorical listening and recover moments of silence. It also provides a forum for experiencing how events and moments ripple across time and space differentially. Reception with coffee and tea to follow. |
