Inari Sámi Folklore: Decolonization & Reconstructive Ethnography in Translation
Tim Frandy, Assistant Professor of Folk Studies at Western Kentucky University and the member of the Sámi American community, will be speaking on Friday, May 24, at 4:00 pm in Allen Auditorium on his latest translation project, Inari Sámi Folklore: Stories from Aanaar. Focusing on his latest translation project from the Aanaar Sámi community (of 800 members and 400 speakers), Frandy explores the problems of historical ethnography—largely written from colonial, Christian, and patriarchal perspectives—and look at avenues by which Indigenous communities can reclaim and decolonize Indigenous history and culture through reconstructive ethnographic work.
