Description | Screening and discussion of “Letter from Masanjia”, an Oscar-nominated documentary that exposes atrocities in China’s forced labor camp system from a political dissident’s perspective, filmed secretly in China with the help of Peabody-winning director Leon Lee. It details an epic story of how, an Oregon woman finds an SOS note from a Chinese dissident in a package of Halloween decorations from Kmart, setting off a chain of events that would shut down the entire labor camp system in China and ignite the note-writer’s dangerous quest to expose a deadly persecution. Director Leon Lee will be engaging in a post-screening panel with UW anthropology lecturer, Xinjiang specialist and Uyghur rights advocate Darren Byler. This event is co-hosted by a few student groups on campus and sponsored by the UW Department of Anthropology and Center for Human Rights, as well as the Seattle Documentary Association (Sea-Doc). |
