Jean-Baptiste Del Amo: Conversation with the Author Moderated by MaríaElena García (CHID/Animal Studies) and Richard Watts (French/Translation Studies Hub) French novelist and animal-rights activist Jean-Baptiste Del Amo will be on campus to discuss his latest novel, Animalia (Le Règne animal in French, recently translated into English by Frank Wynne for Grove Atlantic Press) in a conversation with students and faculty moderated by UW faculty members MaríaElena García (CHID/Animal Studies) and Richard Watts (French/Translation Studies Hub). Del Amo’s fourth novel is the bleak saga of four generations of pig farmers in rural France and the abject conditions of their lives and those of their animals. He is also the author of a book-length essay on L214, the French animal-rights organization that has famously released videos of conditions in slaughterhouses and force-feeding operations. This event is co-sponsored by French Cultural Services, the Simpson Center for the Humanities, Comparative History of Ideas, and French & Italian Studies. |
