Lidwien Kapteijns is the the Elizabeth Kimball Kendall and Elisabeth Hodder Professor of History at Wellesley College. A scholar of African history, literature, and oral tradition, Kapteijns' scholarship includes four monographs, three major source collections, and 62 articles and translations on diverse aspects of the history and culture of East Africa. Writing for the New York Times, Somali novelist Nuruddin Farah calls her latest book, 'Clan Cleansing in Somalia: The Ruinous Legacy of 1991' (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2014), the "best book about recent events in Somalia… a must-read for anyone wanting to unravel the complicated nature of our civil war."   In 1999 Professor Kapteijns was awarded Wellesley College's Pinansky Prize for Excellence in Teaching.
