Description | Ahead of Dr. Fatima El-Tayeb’s virtual visit on Tuesday, Apr. 13, 2021 (3 – 5 p.m.) to discuss her work on “racial amnesia” and queer of color activism in European politics, Dr. Jason Groves of the Department of Germanics will be offering an introduction to, and discussion forum on, Dr. El-Tayeb’s writing and activism around these subjects. This casual event is oriented toward undergraduates but is open to all in the UW community. If you have the time, this article by Dr. El-Tayeb (“The Forces of Creolization: Colorblindness and Visible Minorities in the New Europe” and available here) offers a good introduction to the topics of her talk, but please feel welcome to attend this discussion whether you have read it or not. Dr. Groves will open the session with a presentation, and there will be a forum for a wide-ranging discussion of race and anti-racist activism in contemporary Europe. Please do feel welcome to drop in or out of the event if you are not able to attend for the entire time. Fatima El-Tayeb is Professor of Literature and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, San Diego. Her work deconstructs structural racism in “colorblind” Europe and centers strategies of resistance among racialized communities, especially those that politicize culture through an intersectional, queer practice. She is the author of three books and numerous articles on the interactions of race, gender, sexuality, religion and nation. She is active in Black feminist, migrant, and queer of color organizations. Jason Groves is Assistant Professor of Germanics at the University of Washington and co-organizer of the Simpson Center-based colloquium on “Transcultural Approaches to Europe.” For more information, please contact Jason Groves, jagroves@uw.edu Here is the direct login link to the event: washington.zoom.us… |
