Speaker: Neve Gordon is a Professor of International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in the School of Law at Queen Mary University of London. He is the author of Israel’s Occupation (2008), co-author of The Human Right to Dominate (2015) and Human Shields: A History of People in the Line of Fire (2020). In this talk, Neve Gordon will focus on human shields in the Middle East, discussing how the position of civilians trapped in theaters of violence has become more precarious and their lives more expendable. He will then draw a connection between human shields in the Middle East and Black Lives Matter protests, showing how the law racializes civilians and at times even facilitates the use of lethal violence against them. |
