Description | This lecture addresses the nature of translation through the lens of translanguaging—the spontaneous deployment of semiotic resources in multilingual communications across the institutionalized divide between languages as well as that between the verbal and the nonverbal. This lecture elucidates how translating at the frontlines and in non-professional settings like advice and advocacy sessions often means going beyond translation as such.Lee explains how translation participates in a complex nexus of communication in superdiverse cities in the UK, and how translanguaging allows us to reconsider the ambit of translation beyond the linear transfer of meaning. Tong King Lee is Associate Professor of Translation at the University of Hong Kong and was Luce East Asia Fellow at the National Humanities Center, U.S.A. (2020-2021). A NAATI Certified Translator (Australia) and Chartered Linguist (U.K.), he is the author of Translation as Experimentalism (Cambridge UP, 2022), Choreographies of Multilingualism (Oxford UP, 2022), Translation and Translanguaging (with Mike Baynham, Routledge, 2019), and Applied Translation Studies (Bloomsbury, 2018).
