| Description | Wendy Call (she/ella), co-founder and co-editor of the annual anthology Best Literary Translations, and translator of three trilingual books by Mexican Binnizá poet Irma Pineda, will speak to us about translating poetry written in Mexican languages, its unique challenges and cariños. She will read from Nostalgia Doesn't Flow Away Like Riverwater (Deep Vellum 2024), a collection of poems by Pineda, which will also be available to purchase. In his translations, Hamza Ahmad (doctoral student in English) embraces the transmodal ghazal and revels in what he feels are possibilities for affecting audiences. He aims to replicate the multiplicity of the ghazal, its openness to interpretation and its affective intensity. Given that the vast majority of people already approach poetry through music, Ahmad explores digital object creation as a translational strategy. |
