| Description | Lanie Millar will present her co-translation (with Fabienne Moore) of Angolan intellectual Mário Pinto de Andrade’s essays and speeches. Andrade, one of twentieth-century Africa’s foremost intellectuals, wrote extensively in Portuguese and French about the urgent necessity for Africans to turn away from Europe, arguing that communities emerging from colonization should focus on their own voices, on self-representation, and on horizontal relationships among Black, African, and decolonizing peoples. Millar will discuss how Andrade viewed and practiced translation, and how his translations helped guide this work into English.
Lanie Millar (Spanish and Portuguese, University of Oregon) is a specialist in comparative cultures of the Global South, especially from Lusophone Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. She is the editor and co-translator with Fabienne Moore of The Revolution Will Be a Poetic Act: African Culture and Decolonization by Mário Pinto de Andrade (Polity, 2024) and the author of Forms of Disappointment: Cuban and Angolan Narrative After the Cold War (SUNY, 2019).
