Celebrate freedom, culture, and community at the Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum’s Juneteenth Freedom Celebration, a full day honoring history, creativity, wellness, music, and tradition. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together as a community to reflect, celebrate freedom, preserve cultural traditions, and create joyful spaces rooted in connection, resilience, and collective healing. This family-friendly celebration invites guests of all ages to gather in joy and reflection.

Enjoy a full day of family-friendly programming, including:
• Everyday Herbalism & Modern-Day Pickling Workshop
• Rooted Recipes Interactive Recipe Exchange
• The Art of Roller Skating: “Style” Roller Skating as American Folk Art
• What’s Cracking: History and Culture of the Black Community and Shellfish

Main Stage entertainment featuring:

After the main stage, enjoy a late skate experience in the museum parking lot featuring music by DJ B Sharp. Guests are invited to roll into the night surrounded by high-energy music, culture, and celebration under the summer sky.

Join us as we commemorate Juneteenth through storytelling, music, foodways, movement, and shared community experiences that honor the resilience, creativity, and culture.

Yoga Session: Golden Glow Yoga

Curious about family history? Join genealogist Hollis Gentry Brown for expert tips on tracing your roots. Discover more about history keepers in our current exhibition, We Make History, as Gentry Brown also shares her research about Cupid Plummer, the Revolutionary War patriarch of the family whose multigenerational diary anchors the exhibit.

This program is in collaboration with the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives and the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Sweet Land of Legacy: Ice Cream Social and Art Workshop

It’s Independence Day! Before heading to your family cookout, stop by the museum for an afternoon of ice cream, reflection, and creativity.

As we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of America, join us for a festive ice cream social where we’ll share memories of Fourth of July celebrations past and reflect on the traditions that shape our families and communities. Together, we’ll consider the legacy we’ve inherited—and the one we hope to leave for future generations.

Following the ice cream social, families will participate in a hands-on art workshop, creating red, white, and blue legacy-inspired artworks that explore their roots, values, and dreams for the future.

Growing Community: How Does Our Garden Grow?

Calling all young gardeners (ages 6-15) and families! Join us for a workshop designed to inspire the next generation of green thumbs. Together, we’ll create a special space in the main garden just for younger gardeners, plant seeds, and learn how to care for them as the seasons change.

We invite our youth to explore gardening, connect with nature, and become future stewards of our community green spaces. We invite our younger gardeners to continue growing their skills in upcoming workshops!
Note: Minors must be accompanied by an adult at all garden events.

Think B4U Move: The Art of Strategy Chess Tournament & Program

Saturday, July 11, 2026, 11 am – 3 pm

Presented in collaboration with the Big Chair Chess Club, this free community chess event will feature a three-round unrated chess tournament, beginner-friendly chess lessons, open play in the Sunburst Lounge, and interactive trivia highlighting Washington, D.C. history and chess history. Centered on the idea of chess as a moving art, the program invites youth, families, and community members of all skill levels to engage with strategy, culture, and connection in a vibrant museum setting. Guests are welcome to compete, learn, observe, and celebrate the cultural impact of chess in Washington, D.C., and beyond.

The Big Chair Chess Club, guided by the motto “Think B4U Move,” empowers youth and communities through chess-based education, mentorship, and life skills development. By blending chess with social-emotional learning and STEAM education, the club transforms the game into a platform for personal growth, opportunity, and community impact.

Graffiti Art with Artist Luis Del Valle

xStep into the vibrant world of graffiti and hip-hop culture in this exciting, hands-on workshop! Participants will explore the history, styles, and cultural impact of graffiti, from bold lettering to expressive street art techniques. Guided step-by-step, you’ll learn how to create your own graffiti-inspired painting on canvas using fine art techniques, including bold, clean lines, splatter and layering methods. You’ll also discover how color choices can attract attention and be
used to create mood and emotion in your work.

This workshop is all about creativity, self-expression, and positive messaging, as we channel themes of love, hope, and art into every piece. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced artist, you’ll be supported throughout the process and leave with a finished painting you’ll truly be proud of. Come ready to learn, create, and be inspired! This workshop is suggested for ages 8 and up.

At the age of 13, award-winning artist Luis Peralta Del Valle began painting graffiti murals across
the District, Maryland, and Virginia. His formal art education started at Bell Multicultural High School and continued at the Corcoran College of Art and Design.
