Details | The Fierce Urgency of Now: Modern Troubadours, Poets, and Wordsmiths Founded by Quetzal Flores in the early 1990s, the Los Angeles-based ensemble Quetzal draws from a large web of musical, cultural, and political influences and commitments. Songwriter and lead singer Martha González calls Quetzal an “East LA Chican@ rock group,” summing up its roots in the complex cultural currents of barrio life, its social activism, its strong feminist perspective, and its rock ’n’ roll beginnings. For this performance, they are calling in some Los Angeles friends to join in. Alice Bag is a singer/songwriter, musician, author, artist, educator and feminist. Alice was the lead singer and co-founder of the Bags, one of the first bands to form during the initial wave of punk rock in Los Angeles. Alice went on to perform in other groundbreaking bands, including Castration Squad, Cholita, and Las Tres. Marisol “La Marisoul” Hernandez was born and raised in Los Angeles, and she is the lead singer in the Mexican American band La Santa Cecilia. The band brings inspiration from all over the world, using Pan-American rhythms like rumba, bolero, cumbia, tango, jazz, rock and klezmer music. quetzaleastla.com alicebag.com lasantacecilia.com |
