Details | Do you admire the beauty of the Korean alphabet but don’t know the language or its history? Perhaps you speak or study Korean and would like to learn more about the language. Gain a deeper understanding of Hangeul, the modern Korean script, in this talk by Dr. Riw Ho-sun, a curator at the National Hangeul Museum in Seoul, South Korea, and currently a fellow with the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Dr. Riw describes the creation of Hangeul by King Sejong the Great, fourth king of the Joseon dynasty in the fifteenth century. Before King Sejong, the Korean language was written in Chinese characters or in a variety of phonetic writing systems. The new singular system of Hangeul encouraged higher levels of literacy by combining elements of alphabetic (like English) and syllabic writing systems. No prior knowledge of Korean is needed to enjoy this discussion of a language that continues to change and evolve today. This program is made possible by support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Korea. |
