Details | Ibrahim, an old man dying of a terminal disease, asks his son Ömer to drive him to the town where he grew up so he can arrange to be buried beneath a tree he planted as a child. When the two men arrive, they are surprised to learn that the tree is now a pilgrimage site, with the villagers claiming the biblical Noah himself planted it. With the town records allegedly destroyed, a standoff with the local authorities ensues. Ibrahim digs in his heels, while Ömer, who is himself in the midst of a separation from his pregnant wife, has misgivings. The winner of three awards at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Cenk Ertuk’s impressive debut feature is a nuanced and deeply sympathetic drama about moral dilemmas and the complexity of human emotions.
