Orfeia is a woman’s vocal ensemble dedicated to preserving and sharing traditional music from Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. From traditional to sacred and from the Middle Ages to modern day, the captivating sounds of the Balkans emerge in beautiful melodies, lush harmonies, unusual dissonances and vocal ornaments, unique rhythms, village songs, custom songs with overlapping lines, antiphonal songs with drones, seasonal music, dance music, and children’s songs. Orfeia places the music in its context — history, language, folklore and folk traditions — giving listeners and participants a window into the traditional culture of other countries. Local Cantor and singer Arianne Brown will perform traditional Hanukkah songs and share stories about the origins and traditions of the holiday. Hanukkah music recalls the holiday’s traditional lighting of the menorah in commemoration of the dedication of the Jewish temple in 165 B.C. Arianne Brown is the Cantor, a Jewish musician trained to lead a congregation in songful prayer, at local synagogue Adas Israel. Fluent in Hebrew and Yiddish, Cantor Brown is also an expert Torah and Megilah reader, pianist, composer, and theater director. Afro Blue, Howard University's premier vocal jazz ensemble, will present jazz and gospel renditions of Christmas favorites. Two unique American art forms, jazz and gospel each feature a blend of inspired improvisation and established musical tradition. Afro Blue’s singers put a new spin on holiday classics.
