Come march with the Anacostia Community Museum! The museum invites you to be part of the 14th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk & Parade on January 20, 2020. This event is held annually on the federal MLK holiday and is organized by the Coalition for Peace, a group of individuals and non-profits dedicated to peace and positivity for the Washington DC metropolitan communities. Over a thousand ‘Peace Walkers’ join annually in the walk along MLK Ave in Southeast DC. Notable previous year attendees included actor and singer Nick Cannon, Mayor Muriel Bowser, former Mayor former Ward 7 Councilmember Vincent Gray, radio personality Donnie Simpson, music virtuoso Blake Miles Hopkins, and the late civil rights legend Dick Gregory. The 2020 March and parade begins at 11:30am on Monday, January 20th at the corner of Good Hope Road and MLK Avenue SE, and ends at Saint Elizabeth's East RISE Center, at 2730 MLK Avenue SE. The march route is approximately 1/4 miles long. If you are marching with the museum, please plan to be at Anacostia Park at MLK Avenue SE & Good Hope Road check-in tent no later than 10am. Look for the museum's white shuttle bus. It will have the Anacostia Community Museum logo on the sides. There will be museum staff present to help you get situated. Once the parade starts you will be marching "alongside" the museum shuttle bus and passing out museum branded pencils to parade viewers. If you would like to carry the museum's banner you should meet Paul Perry, the museum education director at 9:30am at the museum's parking lot, 1901 Fort Place SE, to ride on the shuttle bus to the parade staging area at Anacostia Park. Parking is available at Anacostia Park. You can also take Metro and exit at the Anacostia metro stop. The park and parade staging area is a short walk from the metro.
