Join us for a special Meet the Author story time event. Children's book author Laura Gehl will read her books and share why she chose to write these stories and how they are meaningful to her. The story time will be accompanied by a hands-on activity, and afterwords Gehl will sign copies of her book, for sale in the Museum store. The Books Always Looking Up: Nancy Grace Roman, Astronomer: "As a child, Nancy Grace Roman loved to look up at the stars. She read every astronomy book in the public library. Her teachers told her that science and math weren’t “ladylike” subjects, but that didn’t stop Nancy Grace. Nancy Grace became an astronomer, studying the stars and seeking answers about the universe, she became the chief of astronomy at NASA, and she led a team of scientists to plan and build the Hubble Space Telescope, the most significant advance in her field in centuries. This empowering picture book biography tells the inspiring story of Dr. Nancy Grace Roman, who overcame poor eyesight and gender discrimination to become one of NASA’s top astronomers and a testament to women in science." Baby Astronaut: "Baby Astronaut explores the stars and planets in space. She wears her space suit and helmet and rides in a space craft. Can ants live in space? Can plants grow in space? Find out with Baby Astronaut! The books in the Baby Scientist series bring fun, accessible science concepts to baby's world using simple language, recognizable settings, and vibrant art." The Author Laura Gehl is the author of more than a dozen books for children, including Dibs; Except When They Don't; Juniper Kai, Super Spy; the Peep and Egg series, and Delivery Bear. In addition to being an author, Dr. Gehl has a PhD in neuroscience and is the mother of four children. She lives with her family in Maryland.
