Native Black Washingtonians are confronting displacement and erasure as they face increasing gentrification within the District. Go-go music plays a vital role in this resistance. What more can we do as artists and advocates to preserve Black people and culture in the city? ARTLAB and GIRLAAA begin to answer this important question in a virtual conversation alongside Janeese Lewis George from the Ward 4 Council, Chioma Iwuoha from DC Young Democrats, and go-go artist Michelle Blackwell. This program is a part of ARTLAB’s Respect Her Crank! series. The series includes a set of public programs and a final virtual exhibit, celebrating women in go-go. ARTLAB is a digital art studio for teens, but this program is open to art- and Go-Go-lovers of all ages. ASL interpretation will be provided for this program. If you have any questions about accessibility for this program, please email hirshhornexperience@si.edu. This project received support from the Smithsonian American Women’s History Initiative. |
