Political cartoons have existed for centuries and in 2020 their significance continues to shape how the American public engages with political and social issues. Their use of wit, satire, and symbolism make political cartoons a great learning tool for historians, but also for those who wish to understand the history of race and gender discrimination in America. During this workshop participants will learn about the history of this art form through the examination of images from 1800-2000, and explore ways to incorporate cartoons into any discipline. This workshop is intended for classroom teachers. The Zoom link will be emailed to registered participants 24- 48 hours in advance of the program. Please only register for yourself. We will only be allowing participants into the meeting if their name (and email address) is on the registration list. The Portrait Gallery strives to provide programs that are accessible to all visitors. For questions, or to request accommodations such as an ASL interpreter or captioning, please email NPGAccess@si.edu. |
