*This is our last program for the Inspiration| Action series. Kathy Mendes will discuss Virginia’s history of passing both overt and covert racist policies resulting in modern-day school segregation, how that has impacted the outcomes of students past and present, and what policies can begin to create a more equitable education landscape in the state. Kathy Mendes is currently a research assistant at The Commonwealth Institute for Fiscal Analysis (TCI), a non-partisan research and advocacy organization which focuses on the impacts of Virginia state policy on people with low and moderate incomes and communities of color. At TCI, she leads research on modern-day school segregation in Virginia, and contributes to data research, analysis, and writing in several other issue areas. Born and raised in the state, she is committed to social, economic, and racial justice in Virginia and doing the work to advance it. Prior to joining TCI, Kathy worked with a nonprofit organization focused on addressing inequality in education, providing daily literacy interventions for students in grades K-3 in Richmond Public Schools. She earned her Bachelor of Science in sociology from Virginia Commonwealth University.
