In this fable for the age of conspiracy theories and fake news, American astronauts didn’t go to the moon. Instead, a fake moon landing was filmed in an Indonesian forest. When Siman, a local farmer, stumbles across the event, his tongue is cut out so he won’t spill the beans. Fifty years later, Siman is a man suspended in time, walking around his village in slow motion wearing a homemade space suit and building his own spaceship out of trash. Director Yosep Anggi Noen uses the tools of science fiction to craft a sly, politically pointed alternative history of modern Indonesia. (Dir: Yosep Anggi Noen, France/Indonesia/Malaysia, 2019, 106 min., Bahasa Indonesia with English subtitles)
