In this “ingenious mix of lo-fi science fiction and melancholy ghost story” (International Film Festival Rotterdam), a man in rural Laos has been haunted for fifty years by the spirit of a teenage girl whose death he witnessed as a child, turning him into a pariah in his village. When he discovers that the girl can transport him through time, he returns to his childhood in an attempt to remove the burden of another death: that of his mother, who died of tuberculosis as he looked on helplessly. In her third feature, Mattie Do—currently Laos’s only female director—takes us to a country rarely seen on film and uses its myths and legends to create a story that is both contemporary and timeless. (Dir.: Mattie Do, Laos/Spain/Singapore, 2019, 116 min., Lao with English subtitles)
