Ashley Miller Chelberg from the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge will talk about Hatchling Orientation Indexing: saving baby sea turtles one light at a time. Southern Brevard County, Florida contains a stretch of land that is critical for hatchling sea turtles. Within the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge (ACNWR), Ashley works to determine hatchling orientation and relationships with the lighting environment of the beach habitat. In a hatchling sea turtle's journey from the nest to the sea, lighting and orientation data provides insight into management of factors that can cause disorientation, beach mortality, and decreased survivorship resulting from artificial lighting. Learn more about how hatchling sea turtles make their way safely from beach to ocean and hear more from the researchers who are working to understand how to support the sea turtles' harrowing journey.
