Korean Film Festival DC 2021—Part One: Debuts In the first part of the festival, we present directorial debuts, all of which are by women. They range from comedies to coming-of-age tales and include a drama that reignited Korea’s #MeToo movement. This touching coming-of-age story is about two adolescents: a boy named Boo-hee and a girl named Nokyang (which translates to “Sungreen”). Born on the same day and raised by single parents, the two have formed an unbreakable friendship. When Boo-hee begins to suspect that his father, who his mother told him was dead, may in fact be alive, they set off on an adventure to find him. Along the way they enlist the help of Boo-hee’s half-sister’s slacker boyfriend Sang-ok, who reluctantly becomes a father figure to them. Seo Hyun-woo’s understated yet charming performance as Sang-ok nearly steals the show, but Ahn Ji-ho as Boo-hee and Kim Ju-a as Nokyang are more than capable of carrying this warm-hearted movie on their young shoulders. (Dir.: Ahn Ju-young, Korea, 2018, 99 min., Korean with English subtitles) |
