Details | The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum will mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 15 mission through a celebration of lunar science. Join Dr. Farouk El-Baz and Dr. James Head for a discussion of their essential roles in the Apollo program, from training astronauts to setting scientific objectives to selecting landing sites. Dr. Ellen Stofan, the Smithsonian’s Under Secretary for Science and Research, will moderate. The primary scientific objectives of Apollo 15 were to observe the lunar surface, survey and sample material and surface features of the Hadley-Apennine region, setup and activate surface experiments, and conduct inflight experiments and photographic tasks from lunar orbit. This mission was the first flight of the Lunar Roving Vehicle, which allowed Apollo 15, 16, and 17 astronauts to venture further from the Lunar Module than in previous missions. This discussion will be moderated by Dr. Ellen Stofan, the Smithsonian’s Under Secretary for Science and Research. The program will be presented live on Vimeo for National Air and Space Society Members who register in advance. |
