Heighten your civic awareness through conversations about art, history and material culture. Each month, educators from the National Portrait Gallery will partner with colleagues from across the Smithsonian to discuss how historical objects from their respective collections speak to today’s social justice issues. How do community gardens promote social justice and food security? Educators from Smithsonian Gardens and the National Portrait Gallery will explore how these shared spaces positively impact the neighborhoods where they are located. We’ll feature a portrait of chef and author Alice Waters, who founded the Edible Schoolyard Project. It will be paired with a photograph from the Smithsonian Gardens’ Archive of American Gardens depicting the DeWitt Clinton Farm School, which was founded by reformer Frances Griscom Parsons.
