Edmonia Lewis, the first African American and Native American sculptor to achieve international recognition, is featured on the United States Postal Service’s 45th stamp in its Black Heritage Forever® Stamp series. Join us in-person in the Kogod Courtyard and be one of the first to purchase this commemorative stamp. Celebrate this great American sculptor and the museum’s commitment to stewarding the largest collection in the world of her work. The stamp artwork is a casein portrait by Alex Bostic based on a photograph of Lewis by Augustus Marshall made in Boston between 1864 and 1871. Art director Antonio Alcalá designed the stamp. The Edmonia Lewis stamp will be issued in panes of twenty. The First Day of Issue Dedication Ceremony at 12:30 p.m. ET is held in the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Luce Foundation Center. This ceremony is open to the public. Registration is required at usps.com/edmonialewis. Space is limited on a first-come, first-served basis. This event is organized by the United States Postal Service. Please Note: Wearing a mask is required in all Smithsonian spaces and social distancing is encouraged.
