GROWING COMMUNITY
Gardens are more than seeds and soil. They have been sites of community empowerment, allowing us to connect with the land, feed family and community, and form emotional bonds. What happens when these spaces are no longer available? How can we retain the ability to steward our green spaces and our communities? During this six-part series, workshop attendees will explore how a connection to community, cultural traditions, and well-being can be achieved through gardening in small spaces. Participants will also explore how these smaller thriving green spaces serve as sites of community and habitation for residents of every shape and form. Guest Gardener- Sam Droege, U.S.G.S. Native Bee Lab Gardens provide habitation to neighbors of all kinds. As we work to maintain the summer garden, facilitator Derek Thomas and guest gardener Sam Droege of U.S.G.S Native Bee Lab will explore the importance of a thriving community through the presence of the birds and bees who are important additions to our neighborhoods. Topics will include how and why bees and other pollinators are necessary in any thriving garden, what to plant to attract them, and how birds keep your garden pest free. This season’s workshops will be hybrid. Workshop attendees can join us onsite in the museum’s garden (15 spots available) or via Zoom (see registration link).
