Economic instability is a frequent topic in recent Korean cinema, but rarely has it been treated with such tenderness, intimacy, and deadpan comedy as in this low budget indie gem. Real-life couple Park Song-yeol and Won Hyang-ra—who also wrote and edited the film together—star as a young married couple struggling to make ends meet. As overdue bills pile up and dead-end jobs come and go, they work to maintain their good humor and shared commitment to overcoming their circumstances until desperation leads one of them to secretly make a deal with loan sharks that threatens their bond. Park’s directorial debut “announces the arrival of two inspiring new voices in Korean independent cinema.” (Berlin Film Festival) (Dir.: Park Song-yeol, Korea, 2021, 90 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
