In the Pandemic’s Wake: Social Change and Reflection with Asian American and Pacific Islander Leaders October 18, 2022: “Fight the Virus, NOT the People” 11 days before COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic, a banner that read “Fight the Virus, NOT the People” was carried by members of the Chinese American community at one of the first rallies to protest COVID-19 related hate crimes against Asian Americans. Although it was one of the first rallies of its kind during the current public health crisis, the ongoing discrimination existed far before 2020. How does history shape and inform community wellbeing today? Join a conversation moderated by Smithsonian Curator Theodore Gonzalves with Melissa Borjas (Assistant Professor of American Culture at the University of Michigan), Cathy Choy (Professor of Ethnic Studies and Associate Dean of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Justice at the University of California Berkeley), and Nayan Shah (historian and Professor of American Studies & Ethnicity and History at the University of Southern California). This program is offered as part of the virtual series In the Pandemic’s Wake: Social Change and Reflection with Asian American and Pacific Islander Leaders presented by Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and Asian Pacific American Center with federal support from the Asian Pacific American Initiatives Pool, administered by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center. A Zoom webinar link will be emailed to all registrants and live captioning and ASL interpretation will be provided.
