Sequential Robustness in Adversarial Reinforcement Learning

This thesis establishes a new foundation for adversarial reinforcement learning, motivated by the comparative structure of regret. Existing approaches to robustness typically rely on adversarial training, which often fails to generalize to novel attacks, or worst-case optimization, which provides lower-bound guarantees but tends to produce overly conservative policies. To address these limitations, I propose a framework guided by three key principles. First, robustness should be evaluated at the trajectory level, ensuring stability over long sequences of decisions rather than individual actions. Second, robust agents must be designed with future adversaries in mind, rather than optimized against a fixed perturbation strategy. Finally, principled descriptions of the underlying problem structure are essential: methods that exploit the true structure of adversarial decision-making remain robust as applications evolve, while purely heuristic approaches often prove brittle.

Building on these principles, this dissertation develops scalable regret-based formulations of robustness, analyzes the structural role of partial observability in adversarial reinforcement learning, and demonstrates their effectiveness on both standard benchmarks and real-world applications.

Unleashing Vision-Language Semantics for Deepfake Video Detection

Recent Deepfake Video Detection (DFD) studies have demonstrated that pre-trained Vision-Language Models (VLMs) such as CLIP exhibit strong generalization capabilities in detecting artifacts across different identities. However, existing approaches focus on leveraging visual features only, overlooking their most distinctive strength — the rich vision-language semantics embedded in the latent space. We propose VLAForge, a novel DFD framework that unleashes the potential of such cross-modal semantics to enhance model's discriminability in deepfake detection. This work i) enhances the visual perception of VLM through a ForgePerceiver, which acts as an independent learner to capture diverse, subtle forgery cues both granularly and holistically, while preserving the pretrained Vision–Language Alignment (VLA) knowledge, and ii) provides a complementary discriminative cue — Identity-Aware VLA score, derived by coupling cross-modal semantics with the forgery cues learned by ForgePerceiver. Notably, the VLA score is augmented by an identity prior-informed text prompting to capture authenticity cues tailored to each identity, thereby enabling more discriminative cross-modal semantics. Comprehensive experiments on video DFD benchmarks, including classical face-swapping forgeries and recent full-face generation forgeries, demonstrate that our VLAForge substantially outperforms state-of-the-art methods at both frame and video levels. Perspectives on Interpretability of Neural Models for Representing Text

In this dissertation, we investigate interpretability in the three elements of learning neural text representations: inputs, models, and outputs. We emphasise perspective as we present alternative novel methods to mine and organise meaning in this work. Firstly, examining models, we propose an alternate angle of interpreting Neural Topic Models word-topic distribution, producing better topic representations for interpretation. Next, we apply our previous findings to mine interpretations from the weights of transformer-based Large Language Models. Second, for outputs, as observations is critical to interpretability evaluations, we examine text representations from the human mental model. We propose and formulate a large-scale correlation analysis and accompanying user studies to examine automated coherence metrics and human evaluations. Finally, the model and its corresponding outputs learn from the pre-defined boundaries of the input space. For neural text representations, that would be the token space consisting of words and subwords. To better understand the subword space, we propose an interpretation problem to the word space and a novel perspective on solving for the token space. Using these three elements, we explore the notion of interpretability using creative methodology, and yielding interesting results.

Artificial Intelligence for Music, from Audio to Video, from Cyber to Physical

This seminar explores how AI-embedded tools can enhance individual practice and performance for string professionals and students. We discuss requisite technologies such as audio input analysis, error detection, dynamic and tempo estimation, posture and instrument advising. These capabilities enable AI to provide measurable benefits to musicians and generate genre-specific visual content, addressing two key research questions: (1) When can AI technology improve professional practice and performance? (2) What factors influence musicians’ acceptance of AI?

AI has made impressive progress in forms of images, audio, video, and text. AI's future challenges lie in moving from cyberspace to physical space. The second part of this seminar presents a novel MIDI-to-motion conversion for robotic cello performance. This method converts musical input into bowing trajectories without expensive motion capture. Our approach achieves human-like sound and contributes labeled robotic performance data to the research community. To evaluate this method, humans are invited to compare the sound produced by the robot and by humans.

Who determines the national identity of a corporation, and on what basis? The standard legal tests — incorporation, real seat, corporate control through equity ownership — have long provided a working answer. That answer is no longer sufficient. Corporate national identity has become a site of intense contestation and a first-order governance issue for boards, states, and markets — a development with profound practical and scholarly consequences.

The stakes are especially high in Singapore, which has become the preferred redomiciliation destination for major Chinese firms seeking to mitigate geopolitical exposure. For lawyers, business leaders, and policymakers, understanding corporate national identity through the legal facet alone now produces material blind spots. This lecture introduces a framework that exposes what the traditional legal lens misses. The implications reach across cross-border M&A, corporate governance, and the capacity of corporate law to absorb the geopolitical pressures now reshaping it.

Towards Efficient Continual Learning: From Memory Optimization to Foundation Models

Continual learning, also termed lifelong learning, enables machine learning models to incrementally acquire new knowledge while mitigating the degradation of previously learned information--a capability essential for adapting to dynamic, real-world data environments. This dissertation investigates the core challenges of continual learning and extends its application to enhancing training efficiency in the era of foundation models. The first part of this dissertation addresses the constraints of few-shot exemplar storage with a novel compression framework. While leveraging class activation maps to downsample non-discriminative pixels, we introduce an adaptive masking model, optimized through bilevel optimization, to store more exemplars efficiently. The second part focuses on the data dynamics of continual learning. We model continuous distribution shifts using bell-shaped curves to simulate realistic streams. We identify the challenges of non-stationarity and class imbalance in such evolving environments, and propose a rate-dependent coreset selector for adaptive memory selection to address them. The final part discusses how continual learning (CL) principles can be leveraged to optimize the training lifecycle of foundation models, which have huge capacity but are also susceptible to catastrophic forgetting and prohibitive retraining costs.

This presentation develops a top-down framework for consumer choice modeling using random set functions. We begin with consumer choice probabilities (CCPs) and the projection problem of inferring choices for unobserved assortments. Rational choice models, including random utility, rank-list, and temporal models are unified through the temporal tree representation, which describes choice as a sequential preference process and provides an identifiable representation of rational choice probabilities. We then introduce token trees, where latent tokens generate observable choices as random set functions. Under consistency conditions, token trees induce temporal trees and rational behavior; otherwise, the token process decomposes into rational and irrational components. Finally, we discuss an operational data analytics (ODA) approach that balances structural assumptions with empirical flexibility for modeling irrational and data-driven consumer behavior.

This paper considers an area of complexity in international tax law – the interpretation of double taxation agreements (DTAs). In this paper we examine DTA interpretation complexity by focussing on individual residence articles in DTAs based on the OECD Model Tax Convention on Income and on Capital (the OECD Model), which underpins more than 3,000 bilateral DTAs worldwide. Residence articles based on Article 4 of the OECD Model are ideal candidates for examining complexity in international tax, given the relevance of foreign case law to their interpretation.

Establishing an individual’s tax residence in a contracting State to the DTA is a precondition for applying DTA articles and obtaining treaty protection from double taxation. Where an individual is a tax resident under the domestic law of both contracting States, Article 4 sets out a series of five tiebreaker tests which are sequentially applied to conclusively determine the individual’s residence for the purpose of the DTA. Although the text of residence articles may appear quite straightforward, recent case law decisions have shown that there can be complexities and difficulties in interpreting the tiebreaker tests. Key terms used in the residence article are undefined in the OECD Model, and the test concerned with identifying the State where a taxpayer’s personal and economic relations are closer—which is often the decisive tiebreaker test in practice—relies upon a broad facts and circumstances approach. Whereas in the domestic context the doctrine of precedent is instrumental in ensuring consistency of interpretation, there is an absence of an equivalent feature in the international law context.

Nonetheless, there are compelling reasons to promote measures that may foster a common interpretation of DTA residence articles. DTAs are a vital feature of the international tax regime and there is a need to achieve greater consistency in the way they are interpreted and applied. Previous literature has identified that the decisions of higher courts in other jurisdictions can be better utilised in DTA interpretation. Accepting this premise, we argue that in the current digital age, a resource could be created that would enable courts to readily access such decisions. The justification for such a resource is particularly strong in the context of DTA residence articles, as it is recognised in the literature that common international meanings must be applied if the residence article is to serve its function of resolving dual residence disputes.

Our analysis of recent cases indicates that judges are receptive to considering relevant foreign cases when such decisions are brought to their attention by counsel. It could be that difficulties in accessing relevant foreign case law decisions have impeded the attainment of consistent DTA interpretation. The digital era provides an unprecedent opportunity for overcoming these barriers and developing a truly global jurisprudence on DTA residence articles. In our view, a comprehensive international database of DTA case law decisions originating from higher courts would be a highly beneficial pursuit in the digital age.

Stance-Linked Provenance: How Voter Identity Disclosure Reshapes Voting and Suggestion Incorporation on Crowdsourcing Platforms

Digital knowledge production on collaborative platforms is governed by the interplay between crowd evaluation and feedback, especially in the generative AI era, when ideas and suggestions can be produced at far greater speed and scale. This study examines how evaluator identity disclosure shapes users’ evaluation and ideators’ incorporation of crowd feedback. Leveraging a design change on TVTropes that shifted voting from anonymous to attributable, we find that identity disclosure reduces both positive and negative evaluations, suggesting lower evaluative participation. We also find that the incorporation of detractor feedback is reduced with identity disclosure, indicating that ideators are less receptive to opposing input when feedback is tied to revealed evaluative stance. These findings reveal a governance trade-off: while identity disclosure enhances accountability and transparency, it simultaneously reduces participation and limits learning from dissent.

Aligned Multi-View Scripts for Universal Chart-to-Code Generation

Chart-to-code generation converts a chart image into an executable plotting script, enabling faithful reproduction and editable visualizations. Existing methods are largely Python-centric, limiting practical use and overlooking a critical source of supervision: the same chart can be expressed by semantically equivalent scripts in different plotting languages. To fill this gap, we introduce Chart2NCode, a dataset of 176K charts paired with aligned scripts in Python, R, and LaTeX that render visually equivalent outputs, constructed via a metadata-to-template pipeline with rendering verification and human quality checks. Building on a LLaVA-style architecture, we further propose CharLuMA, a parameter-efficient adaptation module that augments the multimodal projector with a language-conditioned mixture of low-rank subspaces, allowing the model to share core chart understanding while specializing code generation to the target language through lightweight routing. Extensive experiments show consistent gains in executability and visual fidelity across all languages, outperforming strong open-source baselines and remaining competitive with proprietary systems. Further analyses reveal that balanced multi-language supervision benefits all languages and that the adapter allocates a compact shared core plus language-specific capacity.

How should we make capitalism work best for society? To this end, what goals should corporate leaders, public officials, and citizens pursue? This lecture seeks to contribute to the long-standing debates on these questions.

In the lecture, Professor Lucian A. Bebchuk will examine three rival conceptions that have had substantia traction in the “real world” of politics and business – those of

Friedmanesque Capitalism, which supports a corporate maximization of shareholder profits and a limited role for the government,
Managerial Stakeholderism, which advocates encouraging and relying on corporate leaders to use their discretion to serve also stakeholders not only shareholders but, and
Democratic Capitalism, which is deeply concerned about corporate externalities but seeks to address them through external governmental interventions and limiting corporate leaders’ ability to impede such interventions.

The lecture considers what each framework implies for citizens and voters, institutional investors, and policymakers, and how corporate governance debates intersect with broader questions of legitimacy, enforcement, and democratic choice.

Professor Bebchuk will also be commenting on attempts based on harnessing the power of investors, power, using pressures from customers and employees, introducing stakeholder-oriented directors, and requiring corporate leaders to make stakeholder-oriented decisions, explaining why those favoring Democratic Capitalism over Managerial Stakeholderism should not switch to any of these versions of Nonmanagerial Stakeholderism.

Bebchuk , James Barr Ames Professor of Law, Economics, and Finance, Director, Program on Corporate Governance , Harvard University , Harvard Law School, Lucian Bebchuk is the James Barr Ames Professor of Law, Economics, and Finance and Director of the Program on Corporate Governance at Harvard Law School. Bebchuk is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, Inaugural Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Network, and Director of the SSRN Corporate Governance Network., Trained in both law and economics, Professor Bebchuk holds an LL.M. and S.J.D. from Harvard Law School and an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Economics from the Harvard Economics Department. His research focuses on corporate governance, law and finance, and law and economics. Designing for “Just Enough”: How Elegance Drives Adoption and Innovation

In an environment saturated with information, products, and interfaces, users increasingly expect designs that are both simple and effective. Elegant Design: A Designer’s Guide to Harnessing Aesthetics examines how the tension between simplicity and complexity can be addressed by conceptualizing elegance as a form of ideal complexity: sufficiently rich to convey meaning, yet clear enough for immediate comprehension. Drawing on research at the intersection of cognitive science, information theory, and art, Luca Landoli demonstrates that aesthetic pleasure is not merely an optional enhancement, but a critical factor guiding decision-making in design, innovation, and product development. Utilizing over 100 visual examples and case studies, the book presents eight actionable strategies: four for enriching designs that lack engagement, and four for simplifying solutions that have become overly complex. This presentation is particularly relevant for scholars and students in information systems, human-computer interaction, innovation, and new product development who seek to understand how aesthetics can improve usability, sense-making, and adoption. Participants will gain a practical framework for iteratively balancing simplification and complexification to achieve elegant products, services, and user experiences.

Speaker Details: Luca Iandoli, Distinguished Chair and, Dean of the Lesley H. and William L. Collins, College of Professional Studies, St. John’s University, Luca Iandoli is Dean of the Collins College of Professional Studies at St. John’s University. A scholar of collective intelligence, interaction design, and product aesthetics, his work explores how people and organizations make sense of complexity through design. A former Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, he has also served as associate professor at the University of Naples Federico II and visiting professor at Stevens Institute of Technology.Luca is the co-author of Elegant Design: A Designer’s Guide to Harnessing Aesthetics, which bridges cognitive science, art, and information systems to show how “ideal complexity” and aesthetic pleasure can drive better products, interfaces, and decisions.
