Join Kent's Hillside Church and World Relief Seattle in helping build the Paradise Parking Lots refugee community garden. We are converting an acre of paved parking lot space into a community garden with 50 plots, where refugees, immigrants and local community members can gather to grow culturally appropriate foods that promote a healthier lifestyle, improve food access, foster economic independence, and build community. This garden will provide a much needed space for interactive nutrition and health education of youth and adults in the Kent community. Adjacent to the garden, there will also be a full service commercial and teaching kitchen. The teaching kitchen will increase the productivity of the garden by allowing gardeners to learn canning, freezing and fermenting techniques to preserve food beyond the growing season and to also sell in local farmer's market and to the greater refugee and immigrant community. **Be sure to wear closed-toed shoes and clothing that can get dirty. Some activities will be labor intensive and will require lifting.** 8am Join us in MAT107 for morning beverages and a chat about the service for the day, We leave at 8:20am sharp to leave for Kent. 9:00 am: Meet at the Hillside Church (930 E James St, Kent, WA 98031) for a 30min orientation on the vision of the community garden and specific instructions and goals for the day. 9:30am: Begin work. 12:30pm: Conclude work. |
