Description | Assimilation for ethnic minorities like Mexican Americans or Chicanxs has long been an issue which has drawn a great deal of attention for how the identity construction of this ethnic group works. Because Mexican food lies at the intersection between Americans of different stripes, situated as it is along many different points in the continuum of assimilation, my lecture examines the rhetorical dimensions which exist in college writing classes when asking students from diverse backgrounds to conduct an analysis of Mexican food. The complexities involved with rhetorically analyzing such a topic, as I hope to show, will challenge their rhetorical skills and will hopefully help them understand the history and cultural importance of food as a vehicle for understanding how assimilation works with and against the identity construction Mexican Americans.
