What is the relationship between the rise of wine made in China and the country’s economic development? In their research, Cynthia Howson and Pierre Ly apply insights from economic development scholarship to the wine industry and show that the story of Chinese wine is about politics, globalization, economic growth, environmental challenges, land rights, and governance. Cynthia Howson is a Senior Lecturer in Ethnic, Gender, and Labor Studies at the University of Washington Tacoma. In addition to China, her field research has taken her to Senegal, The Gambia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She has a Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, UK, and a Masters from Sciences Po, Bordeaux in France. Pierre Ly is an Associate Professor of International Political Economy at the University of Puget Sound, where he teaches a popular course on the idea of wine. Their first book, Adventures on the China Wine Trail, explores the rise of Chinese wine. |
