Description | Nathan Patrick, UWT History B.A., 2019, presents his original research on the local Skansie Shipbuilding Company. The Skansie name is recognized today in Gig Harbor, Washington but was once known from Southern California to Alaska. The Skansies were part of a mass wave of emigration out of Europe, spurred on in part by the introduction of the steamship. Settled in Washington state the Skansie family became renowned shipbuilders producing over two-hundred wooden vessels known for their quality and craftsmanship. The Skansies not only made their mark on maritime history but represent how immigrants turned patriotic citizens contributed to the Pacific Northwest. About Scholarly Selections A partnership between the UW Tacoma School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences and the Washington State History Museum, Scholarly Selections brings UWT scholars’ work to the public in an informal setting. Talks are held on the Third Thursday of the month when admission to the museum is free. |
