Description | The underrepresentation of formerly incarcerated people in higher education is among the largest inequities in higher education. Various explanations are sometimes given for this inequity. Among these are the intellectual ability of formerly incarcerated people, their lack of financial resources, and the proportion of minoritized groups in the carceral system. However, each of these groups tends to have bachelor degree attainment rates in the teens compared to 4% for formerly incarcerated people. The Post-Prison Education Research has identified another potential barrier they are studying--the possibilities formerly incarcerated people imagine for themselves. In this presentation, lab members will discuss this concept, a study they designed to investigate it, and how this research fits into a long-term program of inquiry. |
