ENHANCING INCLUSIVITY AND ACCESS USING EVIDENCE-BASED STEM TEACHING PRACTICES with Dr. Shannon Seidel, Pacific Lutheran University If you have ever taken a STEM course, what was the experience like? Who talked during class? Who didn't? Who volunteered answers? Whose ideas were valued? In this interactive talk, you will have the chance to experience and explore evidence-based strategies that have been shown to increase equity in STEM learning environments. Many of these tools may be useful beyond the classroom context so you will also be encouraged to consider how equity strategies might be useful in your own personal or professional life. Shannon Seidel is an assistant professor of Biology at Pacific Lutheran University who earned her Ph.D. studying HIV host/pathogen interactions before transitioning to science education research during her postdoctoral fellowship. Her research focuses on the non-content language known as Instructor Talk that is broadly used by instructors and may be important for engaging students, evading stereotype threat, and generating student buy-in for active learning. Currently she teaches courses like introductory biology, virology, and the science education partnership which provides science students with an opportunity to teach in K-12 classrooms. |
