College students live in a radically different information environment than they did in earlier years. Video lectures on almost any conceivable topic are readily available, answer engines can provide worked out solutions to sophisticated mathematical problems, and now generative artificial intelligence can compose original essays in an instant. Dr. Erickson uses his research into students' use of online resources for studying mathematics as a starting point to discuss how we might use social epistemology to recognize how much of our knowledge is based on our trust in others. This perspective will help us address the question of what it means for a learner to rely on others effectively. Ander Erickson has been an assistant professor of mathematics education at the University of Washington Tacoma since Fall of 2017. He studies the intersection between information literacy and mathematics education from several perspectives, trying to better understand how people use tools (including other people) to learn about the world both in and out of school settings. |
