Scholarly Selections is a series of talks (normally held at the Washington State History Museum) on the third Thursday of each month during the school year. These presentations offer the opportunity for museum visitors to hear from University of Washington professors, graduate students, and researchers about the interesting topics they’re exploring. For the last five years, researchers at the University of Washington Tacoma have been engaged in collaboration with their peers at the University of Azores, Portugal, and the University of Paraiba, Brazil in the areas of wireless sensor networks for environmental monitoring and energy harvesting. This presentation shows the progress and the latest developments of this research, its applications, and its potential impact on these regions. It also explains the reasons for this choice of research partnership and displays some unique historical connections these foreign regions have with the United States. Bio Orlando R. Baiocchi is a Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Washington Tacoma. He holds a Ph. D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University College London, and M.S and B.S. engineering degrees from Brazilian universities. He has held several teaching, research, and administrative positions both in the United States and in Brazil. Professor Baiocchi has led many activities of international cooperation, more recently with universities in Brazil and Portugal. His areas of expertise include electromagnetics and wave propagation, linear and non-linear systems, the impact of technology on society, globalization issues, and engineering ethics. More recently, his research interests have moved to wireless network sensors and energy harvesting. He has more than 120 publications in all these areas and is currently collaborating on a book about the History of Communications. You do not need a Facebook profile to watch the program.
