The annual MLK Jr. Unity Breakfast recognizes and celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his historic civic leadership that inspired a nation to strive for equality. This gathering honors the message of Dr. King and the progress he continues to inspire. This year's theme is "Economic Empowerment: On Our Terms" and our keynote speaker is Denise Fairchild, the inaugural president of Emerald Cities Collaborative (ECC), a national nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C. She is charged with advancing ECC’s “high-road” mission to green our cities, build resilient local economies and ensure equity inclusion in both the process and outcomes of a new green and healthy economy. The Unity Breakfast was established by the UW Tacoma Black Student Union to inspire members of the campus community to continue to work to make Dr. King's vision of an equitable society a reality. The program also recognizes students, faculty, and community members for outstanding service to the community through the Dream Awards presented during the program. This year's Unity Breakfast is co-presented by the Black Student Union and UW Tacoma. |
