During GNO, new nursing staff receive onboarding resources to orient them to Nursing Excellence at UC San Diego Health. We discuss the value of our nursing mission, vision, and motto and provide information on how these values are supported and advanced. We highlight team member perks, benefits, and recognition, as well as professional development programs available to our nurses.

GNO is designed for newly hired inpatient and ambulatory nursing staff. If the position requires RN licensure, then attendance at GNO is mandatory.

Foundations for Safe, High-Quality Nursing Practice

NSI-Essentials is an interactive, in-person educational experience focused on Nursing Sensitive Indicators (NSIs) and their direct impact on patient outcomes at UC San Diego Health. The course supports newly hired nurses as they transition into clinical practice by reinforcing foundational patient safety and quality principles through focused, skills-based learning aligned with system standards and evidence-based practice.

Participants rotate through specialty-led stations that address high-impact NSIs, including CAUTI, CLABSI, and HAPI/skin injury, with emphasis on clinical decision-making and accountability, as well as the consistent application of best practices at the bedside.

NSI-Essentials promotes consistency in care delivery, strengthens situational awareness, and fosters shared accountability for nursing-driven patient outcomes across inpatient settings. The course supports organizational quality goals, Magnet principles, and a culture of continuous quality improvement.

NSI-Essentials is designed for newly hired inpatient registered nurses, NLRNs, WIS, & ED RNs.

LVNs, Ambulatory, Case Management, Nursing Administration/Management,

Float Travel RNs, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Student Health nurses are exempt.

Total of 4 hours for NSI-E course: 4 hours of in-person orientation directly after GNO. 4 CEUs will be provided.

Foundations of Precepting (formerly Precepting with Pride)

Precepting with Pride is the foundational training that is required to be a preceptor at UCSD Health. The 4-hour course covers the UCSD preceptor program philosophy and preceptor roles and expectations. Concepts of adult learning are discussed along with individual preferred learning styles. Various teaching strategies with learning validation and teach-back are explored. Purposeful questioning is introduced and incorporated through role-playing to foster critical thinking in a preceptorship. Delivering actionable feedback is covered with scenario-based training integrated. Methods to evaluate oreintees are reviewed and tools for effective communication are provided. Preceptor tools and online resources are explored, including policies, guidelines, and competency-based orientation documents.

Staff members interested in preceptor training should be experienced and competent with an interest to teach and desire to precept. It is recommended for those interested in preceptor training to have one year or greater experience in the role and area in which they will precept. Additionally, manager support to attend preceptor training is mandatory.

The Art of HIV Care

Eligibility Criteria for Testing:

A minimum of 1,750 hours of direct patient care for acutely ill (PCCN) or critically ill (CCRN) patients over the past two years is required to take the exam. This is equivalent to 18 months of full-time work. At least 875 of those hours must be within the last 12 months.
You must hold an active, unencumbered RN or APRN license to be eligible for the CCRN/PCCN exam.

What You Are Purchasing:

For $290, you may apply for one of 17 ANCC nursing certifications using a code in place of the traditional payment method through the ANCC website.

Once you are deemed eligible by ANCC for the certification, you will receive an authorization to test that is given a 120-day testing window. You will need to schedule and sit for your certification exam within this testing window. Failure to schedule within the testing window will require a Re-assignment Request for an out of pocket payment of $100 that is not covered by the program.

You are given two opportunities to achieve certification. If you do not pass the initial exam, you can submit a retesting application through ANCC website as early as 5 days from the initial failed date. You will not be able to schedule your exam until 60 days from the unsuccessful attempt.

Healthcare professionals work in environments marked by stress, suffering, urgency, and emotional overload. Yet even in these hard places, humor - when used with awareness, skill, and ethical intention - can support connection, reduce tension, and strengthen resilience. This 90-minute session brings together theory, current findings, and practical application to show how humor can move from an underused idea to an actionable clinical strategy. Drawing from humor research, Buxman's Theory of Humor in Nursing, and real-world healthcare practice, the presenters will explore how humor can be used appropriately to support patient rapport, team connection, and caregiver well-being. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of the evidence behind humor in healthcare, practical examples of how to use it skillfully, and strategies they can apply in their own settings while honoring professional boundaries and the realities of serious care.

An introduction to Nursing Excellence at UCSDH for all newly hired nurses.

GNO is designed for newly hired inpatient and ambulatory nursing staff. If the position requires RN licensure, then attendance at GNO is mandatory.

AACN Organizational Discount Program for CCRN or PCCN certification test

A minimum of 1,750 hours of direct patient care for acutely ill (PCCN) or critically ill (CCRN) patients over the past two years is required to take the exam. This is equivalent to 18 months of full-time work. At least 875 of those hours must be within the last 12 months.
You must hold an active, unencumbered RN or APRN license to be eligible for the CCRN/PCCN exam.

What You Are Purchasing:

For $205, you will receive a voucher to take either the CCRN or PCCN certification exam. (Please specify which certification you are requesting when purchasing.)
Once the voucher is redeemed, you will have 180 days to schedule and take the exam.

What You Are Purchasing:

For $290, you may apply for one of 17 ANCC nursing certifications using a code in place of the traditional payment method through the ANCC website.

Once you are deemed eligible by ANCC for the certification, you will receive an authorization to test that is given a 120-day testing window. You will need to schedule and sit for your certification exam within this testing window. Failure to schedule within the testing window will require a Re-assignment Request for an out of pocket payment of $100 that is not covered by the program.

You are given two opportunities to achieve certification. If you do not pass the initial exam, you can submit a retesting application through ANCC website as early as 5 days from the initial failed date. You will not be able to schedule your exam until 60 days from the unsuccessful attempt.

Thriving Through Chemo: The Essential Side Effect Guide - Independent Study

The purpose of this course is to enhance knowledge and confidence in regard to chemotherapy side effects and treatment of those symptoms. Participants will engage with an unfolding case study, exploring chemotherapy side effects and the regimens that cause them. Appropriate assessments of side effect severity along with pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic measures, add-on's to standard treatment regimens, patient specific considerations, and healthcare disparities in the treatment of side effects will be addressed. By the end of this session, participants will be equipped to apply strategies for management of symptoms to patients experiencing side effects of chemotherapy.

Foundations of Precepting (formerly Precepting with Pride)

Precepting with Pride is the foundational training that is required to be a preceptor at UCSD Health. The 4-hour course covers the UCSD preceptor program philosophy and preceptor roles and expectations. Concepts of adult learning are discussed along with individual preferred learning styles. Various teaching strategies with learning validation and teach-back are explored. Purposeful questioning is introduced and incorporated through role-playing to foster critical thinking in a preceptorship. Delivering actionable feedback is covered with scenario-based training integrated. Methods to evaluate oreintees are reviewed and tools for effective communication are provided. Preceptor tools and online resources are explored, including policies, guidelines, and competency-based orientation documents.

Staff members interested in preceptor training should be experienced and competent with an interest to teach and desire to precept. It is recommended for those interested in preceptor training to have one year or greater experience in the role and area in which they will precept. Additionally, manager support to attend preceptor training is mandatory.

AACN Organizational Discount Program for CCRN or PCCN certification test

A minimum of 1,750 hours of direct patient care for acutely ill (PCCN) or critically ill (CCRN) patients over the past two years is required to take the exam. This is equivalent to 18 months of full-time work. At least 875 of those hours must be within the last 12 months.
You must hold an active, unencumbered RN or APRN license to be eligible for the CCRN/PCCN exam.

What You Are Purchasing:

For $205, you will receive a voucher to take either the CCRN or PCCN certification exam. (Please specify which certification you are requesting when purchasing.)
Once the voucher is redeemed, you will have 180 days to schedule and take the exam.

What You Are Purchasing:

For $290, you may apply for one of 17 ANCC nursing certifications using a code in place of the traditional payment method through the ANCC website.

Once you are deemed eligible by ANCC for the certification, you will receive an authorization to test that is given a 120-day testing window. You will need to schedule and sit for your certification exam within this testing window. Failure to schedule within the testing window will require a Re-assignment Request for an out of pocket payment of $100 that is not covered by the program.

You are given two opportunities to achieve certification. If you do not pass the initial exam, you can submit a retesting application through ANCC website as early as 5 days from the initial failed date. You will not be able to schedule your exam until 60 days from the unsuccessful attempt.

General Nursing Orientation (GNO)

An introduction to Nursing Excellence at UCSDH for all newly hired nurses.

GNO is designed for newly hired inpatient and ambulatory nursing staff. If the position requires RN licensure, then attendance at GNO is mandatory.

Float Travel RNs, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Student Health nurses are exempt.

Total of 8 hours for GNO day: 4 hours of in-person orientation, and 4 hours for independent NEO-GNO assigned UCLC e-courses. 3 CEUs will be provided.

A light breakfast will be provided. Please bring your own refreshments.
Refrigerator access is not available. If you plan to bring lunch, please bring a lunch bag with ice packs. If you are staying for NSI-E and do not bring a lunch, there are two nearby lunch options available for eating out.
NEO-GNO e-learning modules are assigned in the UC Learning Center and are role-specific. You will see modules aligned to your practice setting (e.g., inpatient or ambulatory). These modules are required and must be completed within the first two weeks of employment.

Foundations for Safe, High-Quality Nursing Practice

NSI-Essentials is designed for newly hired inpatient registered nurses, NLRNs, WIS, & ED RNs.

LVNs, Ambulatory, Case Management, Nursing Administration/Management,

Float Travel RNs, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Nurse Midwives, and Student Health nurses are exempt.

Total of 4 hours for NSI-E course: 4 hours of in-person orientation directly after GNO. 4 CEUs will be provided.

Refrigerator access is not available. If you plan to bring lunch, please bring a lunch bag with ice packs. If you are staying for NSI-E after GNO and do not bring a lunch, there are two nearby lunch options available for eating out.
