Guest Artists Recital: Avery Ensemble [Arts Pass Event]

Avery Ensemble was First Prize Winner of the 2016 American Prize in Chamber Music and the focus of an article in the Summer 2016 issue of Chamber Music America's Chamber Music Magazine. Their concert on January 30 includes works by Bohuslav Martinů and Johannes Brahms.

Utah Philharmonia [Arts Pass Event]

University of Utah Philharmonia concert will feature four of the winners of the Annual Solo Competition. Winners are selected from a large group of competitors from all the performing areas in the School of Music. Each winner will perform a piece that features their instrument or voice. For this concert the orchestra is pleased to welcome vocalist James Bobick, harpist Melody Cribbs, oboist Erika Qureshi, and pianist Suzannah Rose.

Guest Artist Masterclass: Jordi Savall (Virtuoso Series/ Utah Presents)

A luminous star of early music is coming to Salt Lake City to present a masterclass. Jordi Savall, a Catalonian conductor and virtuoso of the viola da gamba, has spent the last fifty years creating early music ensembles and nurturing musical collaborations to perform music on period instruments from the past centuries covering the medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, and, lately, the early Romantic periods. During the masterclass, School of Music students Ambrynn Bowman (viola da gamba), Jacob Ginn (viola da gamba), Kelariz Kesharvz (flute), and Benjamin Drysdale (cello) will perform.

Virtuoso Series/Utah Presents: Jordi Savall Splendor of the Iberian Baroque [Arts Pass Event]

Spring Utah Ballet, with gust pianist Dr. Vedrana Subotic from the School of Music [Arts Pass]

The School of Dance presents 4 exciting dances in Spring Utah Ballet, including faculty works, new creations and a traditional piece.

Utah Ballet will include original choreography from award winning choreographer Heather Gray, and a world premiere from School of Dance Assistant Professor Melissa Bobick. In Visiting Professor Rick McCullough’s "Preludes," Dancers will be joined on stage by Pianist Dr. Vedrana Subotic from the University of Utah School of Music. Finally, Utah Ballet will include Assistant Professor Chris Alloways-Ramsey’s reimagining of the romantic "La Vivandière," originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon.

Chamber Music Society of SLC: Imani Winds [Arts Pass Event]

Celebrating 20 years of music making, the Grammy nominated Imani Winds has led both a revolution and the evolution of the wind quintet through their dynamic playing, adventurous programming, imaginative collaborations and outreach endeavors that have inspired audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Program includes Mozart’s charming quintet for woodwinds and piano (which later inspired Beethoven to write a chamber work for the same ensemble), as well as rarely-performed Schumann Quintet for two pianos, two cellos, and French horn.  Faculty will also perform two duets - Bachiana Brasileira No.6 for flute and bassoon by Villa-Lobos, and an arrangement of Liszt Paganini Etude No.6 (based on the 24th violin Caprice) for two pianos.

University Choirs [Arts Pass Event]

The University of Utah Choirs will present a well-known masterpiece, "Mozart Requiem.” The concert will perform the Maunder version, which is considered as the most authentic version. The concert will feature the A Cappella Choir, Chamber Choir, and two excellent high school choirs, Alta High School and Waterford School. The orchestra will include members of the Utah Symphony. You will not want to miss the annual Choral Union.

Handel’s “Semele” will be performed with the Paradigm Chamber Orchestra conducted by Joel Rosenberg.  “Semele” was written shortly after Handel’s “Messiah.”  A fusion of opera, oratorio and classic drama, “Semele” features gorgeous melodies, powerful choruses, and demanding arias.  Fans of Messiah will enjoy this Handel masterpiece.
