KATHI WEEKS, Professor of Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies (Duke University) // Title of the talk: Abolition Archives, Feminist Futures
Abolitionist Archives presents a feminist political agenda focused on prison abolition, family abolition, and anti/post-work refusal together with a methodological defense of the kind of scaled-up feminist theories that can address those systemic structural phenomena. Focusing on a small archive of US Marxist feminist theory consisting of two texts, Shulamith Firestone’s Dialectic of Sex and Donna Haraway’s “Manifesto for Cyborgs,” and one project, Angela Y. Davis’s prison abolitionist writing from 1971 to the present, the readings concentrate on the texts’ contributions to that political agenda and also to theorizing at the level of structured social relations and collective political activity that it requires.

Dr. Michael Childers: “The Mountains Are Calling, But at What Price? Yosemite's Tourism Dilemma”

Over four million people visit Yosemite National Park every year. They come to stand at the base of Yosemite Falls, walk among the giant sequoias of Mariposa Grove, and listen to a ranger tell of the park’s natural history during a fireside talk. This number underscores both Yosemite’s popularity and tourism’s costs. Based on his recent book, The Mountains Are Calling: Tourists and the Unmaking of Yosemite National Park, Colorado State University history professor Michael Childers will explain how visitor’s helped build Yosemite’s popularity, while also becoming its greatest environmental threat.

Dr. Michael Childers is is an associate professor of history at Colorado State University and the author of The Mountains Are Calling: Tourists and the Unmaking of Yosemite National Park. Born and raised in Colorado mountains, his work focuses on the mounting challenges facing the American West from water development to tourism.
