The Miller Library is ex
cited to welcome artists Peggy Murphy\, KJ Bateman\, and Cynthia Yatchma
n for our July exhibition. Graduates of the University of Washington Sch
ool of Art\, these three artists share a long friendship and exhibition
history. Their mutual love of plants led to this exhibition.

br>Peggy Murphy looks at plants from a botanical viewpoint and interpret
s flower structures in a simplified\, abstract manner.
\;
KJ
Bateman makes small gouache paintings of plants. She is delighted by the
challenge of capturing the complexity of plants on paper.
\;
Cynthia Yatchman uses acrylic paint\, ink\, and printing to build trans
parent layers of floral imagery into a dense\, expressionistic whole.
\;
This exhibition will run from July 2-30. There will be a Mee
t the Artists event at the library on Monday\, July 27 from 5-7:30pm.

The Miller Library is ex
cited to welcome artist Maggie Post to exhibit her work in August.
Maggie Post is a Pacific Northwest artist known for he
r botanical collages and floral watercolors. Her love of the outdoors\,
specifically \;national parks and open spaces\, along with her backy
ard garden\, inspires her work. Maggie grew up hiking in the White Mount
ains\, the Sierras and now enjoys both the Olympics and the Mount Rainie
r area. She photographs flowers and leaves and textures while on the tra
il and uses these as references back in her home studio. \;In her wo
rds:
"\;I hope my paintings become a conversation between the
natural world and my inner one\, and leave the view uplifted. My painti
ngs carry the full spectrum of what I'\;ve experienced in life\, not

design and training\, this class will contrast examples of mal-pruning
with bona-fide forms of pruning art and show how to use them to best eff

In this class\, stu
dents will be introduced to the process of relief printing using a techn
ique known as linocut. Using botanical motifs\, students will learn the
basics of relief design\, block cutting and inking\, and hand printing t
echniques. Each student will leave with a series of their own hand print
ed cards and a block printing supply starter kit to continue printing at
home!

. Anneke received degrees in Biology and Studio Art\, as well as a certi
ficate in Natural Science Illustration from UW. She’\;s participate
d in numerous artist residencies at the nexus of art and science and is
a contributor to Hyldyr\, a publication company that combines art\, ecol
ogy\, and folklore. She draws on her background in the sciences to creat
e detailed watercolors that deal with themes of growth and decay—\;
of our bodies\, our culture\, and our landscapes. Her work often incorpo
rates natural pigments extracted from foraged organic matter such as pla
nts and fungi\, and this exploration allows her to connect deeply with t

This workshop will provide
an introduction to the world of natural dyes with a focus on the use of
common garden plants\, local ornamental trees and flowers\, and even we
eds! Students will learn how to prepare dye baths\, how different fibers
react to natural dyes\, and be introduced to the use of mordants. Each
student will leave with a swatch book and a silk scarf that they dye the
mselves.

a dynamic season in the garden. Many plants are heading into dormancy\,
while others are in a period of active growth. Doing the right gardening
tasks now can set the stage for next year'\;s garden: adding new pla
nts for seasonal interest or making changes to address problems observed
over the past season. Some of the best things to do - or to avoid - at
this time of year may seem counter-intuitive to some gardeners. This ses
sion will cover what to plant in fall\, lawn care\, how to prepare the g
arden for winter\, and how to maximize seasonal interest and appearance.
About this series:
Plants and gardens don'\;t live by the
written calendar\, but by the seasonal cycles and cues of changes in day
light\, temperature\, and moisture. When gardeners become acquainted wit
h the seasonal rhythms and life cycles in the garden\, and learn to work
in sync with nature\, caring for the garden becomes more of a process a
nd less of a battle with potential garden enemies. This series will help
beginning and seasoned gardeners learn how to capitalize on optimal tim
ing and sustainable practices to have a great garden all year long.

Participate in this '\;weed walk'\; and learn how to identify and
gather some of the most common edible weeds and wild foods available in
your garden and in other disturbed areas. Many gardeners are already re
cognizing many of the benefits of these '\;interlopers.'\; However
\, when it comes to serving them up in the kitchen\, few of us have lear
ned to take full advantage of these labor-free gifts. This hands-on work
shop at Discovery Park includes discussion on gathering ethics\, local r
ules and regulations\, safety\, and general information about how to coo
k with weeds. Attendees receive a handy take-home flier with field ident
ification information and cooking tips.
Instructor Melany Vorass
Herrera studied ethnobotany at Evergreen State College and holds a degre
e in environmental policy. For well over 20 years\, her public policy wo
rk focused on such subjects as stormwater\, hazardous waste\, solid wast
e\, environmental cleanup and the Endangered Species Act. She retired to
further pursue her love of plants\, especially the edible kind\, as wel
l as her love of writing. Her new book\, The Front Yard Forager\, brings
DIY harvesting right to your door\, making foraging easy\, accessible\,
and fun for everyone even in the middle of the city or suburbia. Check

Arboretum walking tours are casual walks thr
ough various areas of the 230-acre Washington Park Arboretum. Walks feat
ure seasonal themes\, collections plants\, explorations of botany\, and
the history of our organization.
This educational tour is tailore
d for an adult audience\, although minors are welcome. We will cover his
tory\, botany\, and plant collections at the Washington Park Arboretum\,
highlighting plants and gardens of seasonal interest.
