Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to invite you to our in-person workshop on Research Methods and Academic Writing in Business, Accounting, Finance, and Management, scheduled to take place from December 22 to 23, 2025, at VinUniversity, Hanoi.

Funded by the British Academy and jointly hosted by the University of Manchester and VinUniversity, this final workshop in the series provides early career researchers (ECRs) in Vietnam with training in research methods and academic writing, as well as fostering valuable connections with international experts. The workshop will include a series of presentations by esteemed editors focusing on reinforcing key research methods, academic writing skills, and effective publication strategies. It will have two important features:

1. The invited editors will discuss potential research topics and state-of-the-art research methods and findings in their fields, thus providing guidance on identifying research topics and questions.
2. Participants will have the opportunity to present their research papers to receive constructive feedback and engage in one-on-one meetings with the editors (in person) to discuss their research and publication strategies. The workshop will provide numerous opportunities for networking with the editors and among the participants.

Seminar highlights:

SEAL: Semantic Attention Learning for Long Video Representation (CVPR 2025 – Oral, 0.7% acceptance rate) introduces a new method to handle temporal redundancy and high computational costs in long video understanding. SEAL decomposes videos into semantic tokens for scenes, objects, and actions, allowing models to focus on key entities.

A query-aware attention mechanism selects tokens that are both relevant and diverse, improving efficiency in training and inference. Experiments on MovieChat-1K, LVBench, and Ego4D show SEAL outperforms existing methods in video question answering and temporal grounding, demonstrating strong potential for long video understanding.

Bio:

Du Tran is a research scientist at Google. Before joining Google, he was a research lead at Samsung Research America, a research scientist at Meta AI, and a researcher at NTU. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Dartmouth College, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a B.Sc. in Information Technology from Ho Chi Minh City University of Science. His research interests include computer vision, machine learning, and computer graphics, with a particular focus on video understanding, representation learning, and vision for robotics.
