magnificent railroad station was constructed in Birmingham, Alabama to serve the booming
“Magic City.” Hailed at its opening as Birmingham’s “great temple of travel,” the mosque-like
Byzantine structure, with its magnificent dome and twin towers, was regarded as the finest
railway station in the South, and one of the finest in the country.
Through two World Wars and the Great Depression, the station served Birmingham with a host
of fine passenger trains. Following World War II, the public steadily abandoned train travel for
the convenience of automobiles and airplanes. Then in 1969, after decades of declining
revenues and with most of its trains gone, Terminal Station was demolished to make way for a
proposed urban development project that, never came to fruition.

The exhibition hopes to give insight into the history and culture of the Ensley community as well as the Black childhood experience.
