The History of Railroad Park

As we celebrate 15 beautiful years at Railroad Park, it is important to share how it all started. The idea for the park started as early as the 1970s. The actual project began when a group of Birmingham area citizens considered the idea of creating public greenspace while preserving the cultural heritage of the Railroad District. The group incorporated as Friends of the Railroad District, Inc. in 2000. In 2001, the Urban Land Institute would do a five-day panel to assess market analysis, strategies for public engagement, and capacity. In 2008, Friends of the Railroad District changed its name to Railroad Park Foundation. Railroad Park opened to the public in September 2010, and since that time it has received national and local awards, media attention, and accolades. Approximately 500,000 thousand people visit Railroad Park each year. Ronda Robinson is the Spokesperson as well as the Director of Events & Community Engagement for Railroad Park.
