Journey to the Great Temple of Travel

Central Library Auditorium More than a century ago, at the peak of the “golden age” of passenger trail travel, a magnificent railroad station was constructed in Birmingham, Alabama to serve the booming “Magic City.” Hailed at its opening as Birmingham’s “great temple of travel,” the mosque-like Byzantine structure, with its magnificent dome and twin towers, was regarded as the finest railway station in the South, and one of the finest in the country.
