Nature Speaks: Metamorphoses by Carl Smith

Sculpture Gallery-1st Floor “Nature Speaks” features the art of Carl Smith, who resurrects fallen remains of trees and vines in the form of unique statues, pedestals, and wall pieces. Using a variety of methods and tools, Smith reveals the natural color, texture, and patterns he sees in decaying wood that he finds along roadsides, in parks, and in bodies of water. Among the species he “brings back to life” are cedar, mulberry, Southern red oak, sycamore, and wisteria, to name just a few. An opening reception will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. in the Sculpture Gallery. Smith will host an artist’s talk on Saturday, October 17, at 2:00 p.m. The self-taught Smith, who has a studio in Fairfield, Alabama, has been working with wood for over 40 years. His artwork has been featured in festivals throughout Central Alabama, including Magic City Art Connection and Moss Rock Festival. “Nature Speaks” and the accompanying talk are made possible in part by a grant from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
