This month’s workshop is about propagating plants through seed, cuttings and division. You will receive information about how to make your own propagation soil mix, care for your developing plants, save money and learn about the seasonal cycle of plant life. The practical activity involves making paper pots and planting seeds, cuttings and divisions to take home and care for. From the Ground Up is a five part workshop series on how to garden and grow plants sustainably. The methods and practices in the workshops are designed to restore and nurture the environment and to assist you in growing your garden harmoniously with nature. Sherwood Arboretum, established in 1925, is Brisbane’s only botanic garden dedicated exclusively to growing Australian native trees. The Arboretum holds scientific and cultural values with many of the original plantings undertaken by prominent citizens of Brisbane. World Composting Day - Composting 101
Kitchen and garden waste is a large portion of what many households throw into the home garbage bin. In this workshop we will teach you how to take these simple, free materials and turn them in to beautiful “black gold”. Topics covered include 'what is compost' and how it is made, the environmental benefits of composting, a basic compost recipe, hot vs. cold composting, worm farming, Bokashi, backyard chooks, common problems and remedies, applying compost for maximum return, compost and worm teas, plus much more. Please wear a hat and enclosed shoes; and bring a keep cup or water bottle. This workshop supports the Botanic Gardens' commitment to creating a plant loving community dedicated to putting the plant back into planet. Sherwood Arboretum, established in 1925, is Brisbane’s only botanic garden dedicated exclusively to growing Australian native trees. The Arboretum holds scientific and cultural values with many of the original plantings undertaken by prominent citizens of Brisbane. The guided walk will be led by the Volunteer Guides of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha and the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum.
