From big, bright and colourful blossoms such as orchids, hibiscus and dahlias, to the simple, small or unassuming flowers of cosmos, tea-trees and grass - they are all part of the plant’s reproductive structures. Come explore the botanic gardens through our Spring Hub school holiday activities and check out our flower power with the kids. Finding healing power in plants is an ancient idea. Man has always been in search for agents to cure various ailments. Walter Hill introduced a large number of Australian and exotic plants, many of which turned out to have medicinal value. Many thrive and can still be seen today. Imagine what you may learn about some of our best loved plants.

Requirements: This walk requires average physical activity, including walking distances up to 500m, possibly some uneven ground but mainly paved paths. Come explore the botanic gardens through our Spring Hub school holiday activities and check out our flower power with the kids. Our Creative Glass Showcase provides members with the opportunity to display and sell their handmade glass creations. Showcase visitors can see and buy from a large range of individual glass items, all hand made by Guild members.

Aside from being beautiful – what purpose do flowers have? How are they the same, but different? From big, bright and colourful blossoms such as orchids, hibiscus and dahlias, to the simple, small or unassuming flowers of cosmos, tea-trees and grass - they are all part of the plant’s reproductive structures. Come explore the botanic gardens through our Spring Hub school holiday activities and check out our flower power with the kids. Take a walk to see the range of shapes, colours, sizes and scents that flowers come in, make your own flowers, or sketch, colour and write about your favourite blossom. Explore how a flower’s size, colour and shape attract specific pollinators, learn the parts of a flower and make your own blooming flower. After colonization in 1824, the site of the City Botanic Gardens became a focal point where the penal settlement garden was established to feed the small colony. In 1855, the site was revived as a Botanic Garden in a newly established free settlement. It was from this very small site that the settlement of Brisbane flourished into a town and then grew to a modern city. It was from this site that the state of Queensland developed. Come and learn about the importance of the CBG over the past 170 years.
Guided walks are led by City Botanic Gardens Volunteer Guides.
Requirements: This walk requires average physical activity, including walking distances up to 500m, possibly some uneven ground but mainly paved paths. Stops are short and mainly for guide explanations. Some short standing periods or sitting if required. Please wear a hat, enclosed walking shoes, and be sure to bring a water bottle and sunscreen.

Our volunteer guides all have a love for Brisbane’s Botanic Gardens and a desire to share their passion and knowledge with visitors. The walks are taken at a gentle pace for about one hour. Walking tours for individuals or small groups (no more than ten people) are free and do not require a booking. Have a larger group? Find out more about booking walks for groups 10 or more in size. Location: Meet at the City Botanic Gardens Information Kiosk (next to the Queensland University of Technology’s Main Drive pathway).
