Morris and maypole dancing

In Elizabethan times, Morris dancing was a regular feature of London parades. A form of English folk dance, it first appeared in England in the 15th century. The earliest references place the dance in a courtly setting, but by the later 16th century, it was also performed for the lower classes. Morris dances are generally performed by a group of costumed dancers - usually wearing bells on their shins and/or shoes - who wield sticks, handkerchiefs or swords and are accompanied by one or more musicians. Shakespeare’s clown, Will Kemp, is famous for his “Nine Daies Wonder” in which he danced from London to Norwich. Morris dancing is mentioned in three of his plays (Henry V, Henry VI, All’s Well that Ends Well) and an entire scene is written around a performance of Morris dancing in a fourth - Two Noble Kinsmen. Dancing around a Maypole - dates back to the English pagan era, where the maypole represented a symbol of fertility. Dancers dance in a circle around the maypole, each holding a coloured ribbon… Venue: Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. Parent event: Shakespeare in the Gardens. Primary event type: Family events. Prima Spada - Fencing - the Elizabethan 'arte of defence'

During the Elizabethan period, fencing was a means of settling personal disagreements - particularly about personal honour and reputation - and only rarely used on the battlefield. A skill requirement of the upper-class nobility, gentlemen were trained in the art of fencing from childhood. Fencing featured in many of Shakespeare’s plays (e.g. Hamlet and Romeo & Juliet) as it was a common part of life, relatively safe to show on stage, and very visually impressive. Grab a blanket, a glass of mead, a picnic lunch and find your own patch of grass from which to enjoy the fencing performances by Prima Spada. Why not join in one of the learn to fence sessions. 11.30am - Learn to fence session , 12noon - Main display , 1.30pm - Learn to fence session, Note: Learn to fence sessions participants must be at least 14 years old. Children under 16 are to be accompanied by an adult. Elizabethan dance performance

During the reign of Queen Elizabeth the First, music and dance experienced a golden age. She was very fond of dancing and demanded her Court be proficient as well. The popularity of dance reached such a height, that some of the great political and romantic court battles of that time were not fought by political means, but on the dance floors of London Court. Some of the most notable Court dances of the Elizabethan era included the stately Pavane, the more moderate Almaine, the energetic Galliard and Courante, and the outrageous La Volta, where the male partner would lay hands on the female to lift her up into the air. The country dances of the middle and lower classes were generally less 'stately' and tended to be progression style dances with interaction between partners and other dancers. They often had interesting names - such as Jenny Plucks Pears and The Maid Peeped Out at the Window. Enjoy watching - or even participating in - a display of Elizabethan dancing with historian Dr Heather Blasdale Clark… Venue: Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha.
