Installation of Oivi-Gorari Battle monument
Join us for a free talk exploring the World War II Battle of Oivi-Gorari and the 2018 installation of a memorial honouring the brave Australians involved in this engagement.
The Battle of Oivi-Gorari was one of the bloodiest engagements of the Kokoda campaign during World War II. The offensive took place between 4–11 November 1942 and was a decisive victory for Australian troops, resulting in Japanese forces abandoning their plan to take Port Moresby and focus on holding their base at Buna-Gona.
The battle came at the cost of 133 Australians who were killed and 225 who were wounded. It is thought that more than 430 Japanese soldiers were killed during the fierce week-long fight. One American professor of military history identified this offensive as the most significant land battle in the Pacific theatre in World War II, despite no American troops taking part in the action. Sadly, few Australians have heard of this battle, and it is rarely mentioned in books or documentaries on the New Guinea campaign.

boy girl wall
Celebrate La Boite’s 100-year history with La Boite Encores, a captivating play-reading series that brings 10 iconic Australian fan favourites from the La Boite archives to life
boy girl wall
Side by side in a leafy suburb, Thom lives in one flat, Alethea in another. It's pretty clear that their respective, unsatisfying lives would improve enormously if they just met each other. But with a wall literally between them, this seems highly improbable. Then there's the building's Power Box, having an existential crisis about the eventual collapse of the universe, and the supernova from five thousand years ago. Then there's time travelling on an equation for the speed of light and too much sugar. There's demon magpie attacks, laptops in love, cats dancing to Prince and sock puppet nightmares. And a tiny prayer by the Wall, hoping that all of these pieces can come together for one magical moment of love.
boy girl wall featured in La Boite’s first ever million-dollar season in 2011 with shows in both April and…

Dance Leads to Chaos
Dance Leads to Chaos is an artistic exploration of what it means to have dance restricted, regulated, and removed from our lives. The work gathers inspiration globally from historic bans on dance and artistic expression. Dance Leads To Chaos leans into the recent experience of Australians during the COVID-19 dance restrictions and reminds us that this has happened before to First Nations people, and other cultures around the world. Part dance work, part public service announcement, it creates a space to debrief with audiences and re-evaluate the significance of dance.
