Every month, something quietly wonderful happens at South Brisbane Cemetery.  Neighbours, families, history lovers, and curious newcomers roll up their sleeves and come together as part of our Guardian Angels program. A cheerful, hands-on initiative where we clean and care for the graves of those long gone, but never forgotten. Launched in 2018 (with roots reaching back to 2005), this volunteer program invites people of all ages and backgrounds to help preserve the beauty and dignity of one of Brisbane’s most historic cemeteries.  Whether you’re gently washing a headstone, trimming overgrown grass, or simply uncovering a long-hidden inscription, every small act reveals a story and restores a little light to the lives buried here. These relaxed, feel-good days have become one of our most loved community events, with many participants returning month after month, some even bringing along the whole family. Remembrance and rosemary: school holiday craft activity

Collect and decorate your free pot of authentic Gallipoli rosemary at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries these school holidays, daily at 10am from 7–17 April (closed Saturdays). Suitable for all ages, this 30-minute family-friendly activity is facilitated by our knowledgeable team as we explore the special connection between rosemary and Anzac Day. Australians wear sprigs of rosemary on Anzac Day as a symbol of remembrance. The tradition comes from the wild rosemary growing on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Türkiye — the site of Australia’s first major engagement in the First World War. It is said that a wounded digger brought a rosemary bush home from ANZAC Cove, and cuttings from it were later propagated across the country. Today, rosemary grows at Anzac Square and at war memorials nationwide. Participants will receive a free Gallipoli rosemary plant in a plastic tube, along with craft supplies to decorate their pot in memory of someone they are honouring this Anzac Day. Stories from Gallipoli

Join us at Anzac Square Memorial Galleries on Sunday 12 April for a free talk exploring stories from the Gallipoli campaign. The Gallipoli campaign was a plan to knock the Ottomans out of the war but quickly turned into a stalemate that would continue for eight long months. Though they suffered heavy losses—and the campaign would fail to achieve its objectives—the actions of the Australian and New Zealand troops during this campaign began the ANZAC legend and saw the world stand up and take notice. Back by popular demand, this talk will feature new content and personal stories, including: Constance Keys, who was one of the first four Queensland nurses to embark for Egypt in September 1914 and spend five years nursing wounded soldiers. , Able Seaman John Harrison Wheat, a submariner on the AE2 that was sunk in the Sea of Marmora in April 1915. , Henry, George and Alexander Foot, three brothers who fought at Gallipoli, with two killed in action during the campaign. , Stories from support staff to highlight… Venue: Anzac Square, Brisbane City. English linked sword dance

Step into the rhythm of steel and tradition with English Linked Sword Dance. This striking folk dance brings together precision, teamwork, and centuries of English heritage. Dancers move in tight formations, each holding a sword linked to the next, creating intricate patterns, locks, and woven figures that flow seamlessly with the music. The highlight comes when the swords are joined to form a star or “lock,” lifted high in a dramatic display of skill and unity. Energetic, powerful, and deeply communal, English linked sword dance is as much about cooperation as it is about spectacle. No solo stars here - every movement depends on trust, timing, and connection with the whole team. Whether you’re drawn by history, live music, or the thrill of learning something bold and different, this is your chance to be part of a living tradition.
