Created by Mayor Bass, Shine LA is a movement that strengthens communities by bringing Angelenos together from across the city to beautify LA neighborhoods. With major global events just around the corner – the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 2027 Superbowl and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Shine LA inspires Angelenos to take pride in preparing their communities to step onto the world stage.  Since launching in April, Shine LA has brought together more than 2,000 Angelenos for a day of service in more than 30 neighborhoods across Los Angeles. National Holidays Each year on April 22, it is National Earth Day. This annual day is held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. John McConnell pioneered the name and concept of Earth Day in 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco. His thought, for Earth Day, was to have it be the first day of spring, March 21, 1970 and that day was sanctioned in a Proclamation signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. One month later a separate Earth Day, focused on the United States, was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. Created by Mayor Bass, Shine LA is a movement that strengthens communities by bringing Angelenos together from across the city to beautify LA neighborhoods. With major global events just around the corner – the 2026 FIFA World Cup, 2027 Superbowl and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games – Shine LA inspires Angelenos to take pride in preparing their communities to step onto the world stage.  Since launching in April, Shine LA has brought together more than 2,000 Angelenos for a day of service in more than 30 neighborhoods across Los Angeles.
